A New World After the Rain

Free form excerpts from The Dreamer by Pam Muñoz Ryan
A+New+World+After+the+Rain
Ms. Levine

the rain drummed down (1)

…watching flotsam float downriver (3)

Raindrops strummed across the roof (5)

the piano of wet notes (8)

plip-plip plop… oip, oip, oip (6)

For a month, the clouds spilled. (42)

the sea plucked at the rugged land (8)

What is the color of a minute? A month?

A year? (74)

tiny blossoms made the spring air smell peppery (79)

tiny needles of light

piercing the canopy,

the crisp fragrance of wet leaves,

wild herbs, and cinnamon. (97)

a caterpillar to the veined leaf,

a snake to the twig,

a fox to the seedpod. (118)

the flowers bowed their heads

toward one another. The trees reach out

in leafy embraces.

Even the thistles clumped together like old friends. (128)

the fog thinned to mist,

the mist lifted above them,

and the world opened up. (148)
