Ode to My Black Zip Up Jacket

    Ode+to+My+Black+Zip+Up+Jacket
    Ms. Levine

    my black jacket

is plain black like the night

it has a hood for the rain

    and a golden zipper

the jacket wraps me like a warm hug

    it is not heavy

like a weight I have to bear

    but it is not light

as to leave my sensitive skin

    shivering at a wind

I wore that jacket when I had that terribly short haircut

    that was convenient,

    but not comely

    I wore that jacket

    even though I had

a thick gray jacket on top of it

    to an open house

of a school I was accepted to

     but declined

    I wore that jacket

while getting ready for my prom

    with sparkly makeup

that I was never fond of to begin with

I wear it in the summer and winter

I wear it in the fall

I wear it when I am at my lows

when I have nothing at all

    I don’t know why

    but that black jacket

    will always be my favorite

Taylor Swift may have her cardigan

    but I will always have

    my black zip-up jacket
